Privacy Policy

Browser Insight reads the following data locally from your Mac — only after you explicitly grant permission:

Browser History Data

• What: Page URLs, page titles, visit timestamps, visit counts, and visit durations from your Safari and/or Chrome browser databases.
• How: Through macOS secure folder authorization. You manually select your browser's data directory via a system dialog (NSOpenPanel). We use macOS security-scoped bookmarks to remember your authorization.
• Why: To generate browsing analytics, time distribution charts, category breakdowns, and other insights displayed within the app.

Browser Favicon Data

• What: Website icons (favicons) from your browser's local cache.
• How: Read from Safari's Favicon Cache and Chrome's Favicons database on your local disk.
• Why: To display recognizable website icons next to browsing entries in the app.

Data We Do NOT Access

• We do not read your browser bookmarks, passwords, cookies, autofill data, or any browser extension data.
• We do not read browsing data from any browser other than Safari and Chrome.
• We do not access any data without your explicit folder authorization.

Local Processing Only

All data analysis happens entirely on your Mac:

• Browser history is read from your local browser database files.
• Records are stored in a local SQLite database (BrowserInsight.db) within your user Documents folder.
• Statistical computations (time estimation, category classification, trend analysis) are performed on-device.
• No data is transmitted over the internet. The app makes no network requests for analytics or data processing.

Data Storage

• Location: ~/Documents/BrowserInsight.db on your Mac.
• Format: Local SQLite database, accessible only to the app and your user account.

Data Export

When you choose to export data (CSV, JSON, or PDF), the exported file is saved to a location you choose via a system Save dialog. Exported files remain entirely under your control.

How Authorization Works

Browser Insight requires your explicit permission to read browser data:

1. You initiate access by clicking "Authorize" and selecting your browser's data folder through a macOS system dialog.
2. macOS grants the app a security-scoped bookmark — a controlled access token for that specific folder.
3. The app uses this bookmark to read browser history files. We only read data — no files are modified.
4. You can revoke access at any time from the Settings page by clicking "Reset Authorization."

Why Authorization Is Needed

Browsers store history in local SQLite database files. macOS sandboxing requires apps to obtain explicit user consent before accessing files outside their own sandbox. This is a security feature of macOS that protects your data.

What Happens When You Revoke Access

• The security-scoped bookmark is deleted.
• The app can no longer read your browser's history files.
• Previously synced data in the app's local database remains until you choose to delete it via Settings → "Reset All Data."

Browser Insight does not integrate any third-party services, SDKs, or APIs. There are:

Retention

Your browsing data is stored locally in the app's database for as long as you choose to keep it. The app does not automatically delete historical data.

Deletion

You have full control over your data:

• Delete all data: Go to Settings → Data Management → "Reset All Data" to permanently delete the local database.
• Revoke browser access: Go to Settings → Data Source → "Reset Authorization" for any browser.
• Uninstall: Removing the app from your Mac deletes the app itself. To remove all associated data, also delete ~/Documents/BrowserInsight.db and any related files in ~/Library/Caches/ for the app.

Browser Insight is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect data from children. Since no personal data is collected or transmitted by the app, there is minimal risk. However, parental guidance is recommended for minors.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your data:

Under GDPR (European Economic Area)

Since Browser Insight processes all data locally and does not transmit any personal data to us, most GDPR obligations that apply to data controllers with server-side processing do not apply in the traditional sense. However, we respect the principles of GDPR:

• Right to access: All your data is stored locally on your Mac — you have direct access at all times.
• Right to deletion: You can delete all data via Settings at any time.
• Right to data portability: You can export all data in CSV, JSON, or PDF format.
• Data minimization: We only read browsing history — nothing more.

Under CCPA (California)

• We do not sell your personal information.
• We do not share your personal information with third parties.
• Your data never leaves your device.

Under PIPEDA (Canada), LGPD (Brazil), and Other Regulations

The same principles apply: all processing is local, no data is collected or transmitted, and you maintain full control over your data.

Browser Insight offers an auto-renewable subscription. Unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, your subscription will automatically renew and be charged through your Apple account.
